Kentucky Football Collects National Accolades After Historic 6-1 Start
Kentucky football head coach Will Stein secured On3 Sports’ Midseason National Coach of the Year award, while offensive lineman Lance Heard landed on the First Team All-American list, it was announced Tuesday. The recognition highlights a remarkable turnaround for the program, which sits tied atop the Southeastern Conference standings.
The midseason honors reflect a radical shift from the team’s 5-7 record a year ago. Stein has engineered an explosive offensive surge in his debut season in Lexington, positioning the Wildcats firmly in the national playoff conversation.
How Will Stein Rewrote the Kentucky Record Books
Stein’s arrival in Lexington immediately shattered historical benchmarks that had stood for decades. He became the first UK head coach to open a debut season with a 6-1 record since Alpha Brumage accomplished the feat in 1913. He joined Paul "Bear" Bryant in 1946 and Blanton Collier in 1954 as first-year coaches who led the Wildcats into the national rankings.

The victories have come with notable drama and offensive volume. Following a 17-0 deficit in the second quarter, Stein’s squad engineered the biggest comeback road win in school history against South Carolina. He also stands as the first head coach in program history to score 31 points in five of his first six games, and the first to win his initial two career SEC road games. On3 senior national college football reporter Chris Low noted that Stein’s energetic play-calling style translates directly to success in college football’s most punishing conference.
Stein coaches the way you played on Saturday afternoons in the backyard when the neighborhood kids gathered to play a pickup football game. He’s going for it on every play, especially two-point conversions, and breathes energy and passion into everybody around him, Low wrote.
Lance Heard and the Reconstruction of the Big Blue Wall
While the offense generates points at a historic rate, senior left tackle Lance Heard anchors the line responsible for protecting that production. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 325 pounds, the Bonita, Louisiana native transferred into the program and quickly solidified the trenches. The rebuilt offensive line recently earned a spot on the Joe Moore Award midseason honor roll.
Heard earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors following the comeback victory over South Carolina. In that matchup, he graded out at 81 percent, secured five knockdown blocks—including two on a single viral play—and allowed zero quarterback sacks or penalties. He repeated the five-knockdown performance the previous week against South Alabama, anchoring an offensive line that paved the way for 390 rushing yards and earning a spot on the PFF College Team of the Week. Low emphasized that acquiring Heard through the transfer portal from Tennessee was a primary roster priority for Stein.

The Road Ahead Against Vanderbilt at Kroger Field
The No. 12-ranked Wildcats hold a 6-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in SEC play, matching Georgia at the top of the conference standings. The team looks to sustain that momentum when they return home to host Vanderbilt, which enters the matchup with a 3-4 overall record and a 0-4 conference standing.
The contest kicks off on October 24 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Kroger Field and will broadcast live on the SEC Network. While the game is officially sold out, verified resale tickets remain available through UKathletics.com for fans attempting to attend the primetime conference matchup.
