Before the start of the second division between Hamburger SV and Schalke 04, HSV striker Robert Glatzel announced bitter news.
Hamburg – For FC Schalke 04, the season in the 2nd Bundesliga starts with a real bang. On Friday (July 28th, 8:30 p.m.) the “Knappen” open the new season under floodlights at Hamburger SV. However, an important HSV column is missing.
Schalke against HSV: Hamburg has to do without captain Sebastian Schonlau
Like Hamburg striker Robert Glatzel, according to the morning post revealed in a media round on Tuesday (July 25), captain Sebastian Schonlau will miss the season opener against the S04. The centre-back is suffering from calf problems and will not be fit in time for Friday.
Apparently, that also surprised the players at HSV. “I didn’t assume that it wouldn’t work out,” said Glatzel about his teammate’s retirement. Schonlau informed him in the cabin. “I just spoke to him again. It’s a shame, of course, but that’s part of the game.”
Sea morning post the new signings Dennis Hadzikadunic and Guilherme Ramos could now form the central defense against Schalke 04. A debuff? “Bascho (Schonlau, Anm. d. Red.) is of course irreplaceable as a captain. He’s incredibly important to us,” Glatzel assesses the situation.

However: The central defense was also a problem area for the opponents from Gelsenkirchen. Before the HSV game, Schalke presented a defensive newcomer in Timo Baumgartl. After Leo Greiml’s injury (cruciate ligament rupture), the Royal Blues only had three central defenders in Marcin Kaminski, Henning Matriciani and Ibrahima Cisse.
In contrast to HSV, Schalke now have newcomer Baumgartl on board. And the captain. Simon Terodde wants to build on his last second division season to date, when he shot the S04 back into the Bundesliga with 30 goals in 30 league games.

Schalke coach Thomas Reis has to do without another leading player against HSV (the game in the S04 live ticker from RUHR24). Ralf Fährmann does not get fit in time after a muscle fiber tear and is replaced at least in the first game of the season by newcomer Marius Müller.
