The Nizhny Novgorod team started the playoffs away against SKA – given Torpedo’s results at the end of the regular season, many called the army team the favorite of the series. The absolute record in KHL matches was set at the SKA – CSKA match in 2018, held at the Gazprom Arena – 67,770 spectators.
Big mess in Omsk
Avangard started the Gagarin Cup at home in the series against Lada. The first match, both in terms of the game and the score, went smoothly for the “hawks” – five goals scored and a confident victory (5:1). At the end of the game, Maxim Berezin first fouled the leader of the Omsk team, Vladimir Tkachev, and then harshly met him, provoking mass skirmish. As a result, three players from each team ended up on the penalty benches, and the meeting ended with a fight between Mark Verba and Vladislav Semin. Apparently, in this way the Togliatti team decided to show their opponent that they shouldn’t expect an easy life in this series.
Labor victory for Magnitogorsk
Another pair – “Metallurg” and “Amur” – started in Magnitogorsk. The first two periods ended without goals, and in the third, goals from Egor Yakovlev and Luke Johnson brought victory to the hosts, although the guests responded with a goal from Jan Drozg. In the end, the Khabarovsk team had chances to save themselves, but they remained unrealized. Largely thanks to Magnitogorsk goalkeeper Ilya Nabokov, who started the first KHL playoffs in his career with a victory.

For Avangard forward Valentin Pyanov, the first match of the series against Lada was the 600th in the KHL, Igor Geraskin from Metallurg played his 400th meeting in the League. Also, two torpedo players celebrated their anniversaries with victory: Ivan Kulbakov (100 matches) and Nikolai Kovalenko (300 matches).
