Kika/Leiner – mega deal in the context of short-term donors with damage to taxpayers

Supernova boss Albert donated 60,000 euros – taxpayers lose over 100 million euros

Vienna (OTS) Barbara Teiber, chairwoman of the GPA trade union, describes the fact that kika/Leiner is now being processed with tax money as “more than a lopsided view”, while real estate mogul Frank Albert is benefiting from a mega deal with his Supernova Group. Albert, who bought the real estate from kika/Leiner, but not the operational business of René Benko’s SIGNA Group, donated EUR 40,000 to Kurz-ÖVP in the 2017 election year via his company BM 454 GRA GmbH and EUR 20,000 via the Supernova Group. Teiber: “The taxpayer loses more than 100 million euros, while short donor Albert does a good deal. What are the 1,900 employees supposed to think who lose their jobs even though they didn’t do anything wrong?”

Today it became known that the majority of the approximately 150 million euros in liabilities are tax deferrals, 80 percent of which have to be written off due to the restructuring process. Almost five and a half million euros in Corona aid funds were also transferred to the company, which is now laying off 1,900 employees.

The trade unionist: “In summary: Benko buys kika/Leiner, manages poorly, benefits from the state, sells real estate and business separately, makes a profit and lets employees and taxpayers pay more. Albert buys the valuable real estate and has no problem with the ailing company that is being wound up at the expense of all of us.”

“Many employees are about to lose their jobs, while others like Benko or Albert are apparently doing good business. Ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz was already involved in the takeover of kika/Leiner by Benko five years ago, and now a short-term donor is benefiting. It’s more than a bad aftertaste,” says Teiber.

“As a trade union, together with the Chamber of Labour, we will be available to give advice to employees in all 40 branches of kika/Leiner. We call on the government to change the law in such a way that companies cannot irresponsibly chase their own profits while employees are left behind!”
