Kilauea produced 54 lava fountains between 2024 and 2026, study finds

Between December 2024 and September 2026, Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano produced 54 distinct lava fountains, an unprecedented frequency for the site. This recurring pyrotechnic display, which included bursts reaching up to 457 meters into the air, has provided researchers with a rare opportunity to study the mechanics behind episodic volcanic eruptions.

A Rare Pattern of Activity

While occasional lava fountaining is common during volcanic eruptions, repeated bursts separated by minutes or weeks are highly unusual. Since 1823, Kilauea has experienced clustered spurts only three times, and never with the frequency observed during this most recent period. The current fountain era began at dawn on December 23, 2024, with an eruption occurring inside the summit crater of Halema’uma’u.

Investigating the Volcanic Piston

To understand what sustains these fountains, scientists monitored seismic activity, ground deformation, and gas emissions. Researchers observed that the caldera floor consistently swelled and tilted prior to each fountain, indicating the accumulation of magma beneath the surface. Starting with the fourteenth fountain, the team identified a repetitive sequence of seismic energy and low-frequency acoustic signals.

These findings suggest that trapped gases within the magma act like a piston in a car, forcing the material to rise and fall through narrow volcanic vents. By analyzing the gas composition, researchers were able to rule out the theory that carbon dioxide–rich foam was driving the eruptions, as the volcano emitted relatively little of that gas. According to the research team, led by geophysicist Ashton Flinders, these observations offer a preliminary glimpse into the phenomenon, though many questions regarding the exact triggers of these episodic events remain.
