Kimi Antonelli wins US Grand Prix but misses world championship title

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on October 25, 2026, but missed securing the world championship title as teammate George Russell finished eighth and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton took fourth place. Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings by 123 points with five races remaining. He needs now only to score two points during the season’s final five races to become world champion.

George Russell Får En Tung Helg I Austin

  • George Russell, som startade sexa och gick i mål som åtta en minut efter Antonelli efter att ha dragit på sig en bestraffning och haft problem med bilen, fick en tung helg i Austin.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli executed a flawless tactical race on medium compound tires before switching to hards on lap 25. By managing rubber degradation expertly, the 20-year-old Italian completed the race with a single pit stop. This strategy outmaneuvered Red Bull and Ferrari, both of whom committed to compromised two-stop strategies after starting on soft compounds.

Max Verstappen capitalized on early soft-tire pace to briefly lead the race before pitting on lap 14. However, the reigning world champion wrestled with severe understeer, describing his Red Bull chassis as “okörbar” (unroadworthy/untestable), before falling back through the field. Antonelli reclaimed the lead on lap 32 following Verstappen’s second stop and remained entirely unchallenged to the checkered flag.

Antonelli Kan Säkra Titeln I Mexico

Antonelli secured his ninth victory of the 2026 season in Austin, maintaining a massive 123-point lead over his closest rivals. While math dictated that specific lower finishes by Hamilton and Russell were required to seal the title in Texas, Hamilton’s fourth-place finish and Russell’s eighth-place points-scoring drive kept the championship mathematically open by the slimmest of margins.

The Italian rookie now needs only to finish ninth or better at the upcoming Mexico Grand Prix to claim the championship crown. Should he achieve the feat, he will surpass Sebastian Vettel to become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history. Antonelli secured his seventh pole position of the year in Austin by outpacing Verstappen by 0.179 seconds.

Russell Och Bearman Kämpar Med Problem

While the front-runner managed his race cleanly, the broader grid experienced substantial friction and tactical errors. Mercedes driver George Russell started sixth on the grid but struggled extensively with car balance, accumulating a time penalty and finishing a full minute behind Antonelli.

Further down the order, Haas driver Oliver Bearman endured a difficult outing, collecting a ten-second penalty following an on-track collision with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly before ultimately being forced to retire from the grand prix. Valtteri Bottas, driving for Cadillac, also failed to finish the race, triggering a late Virtual Safety Car period that Verstappen admitted assisted his own recovery to the final podium steps.

Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam

David Rumbutis wrote gymnastics history when he became the first Swede to reach a World Championship final in parallel bars. He qualified in as the eighth and last man, but managed to place seventh in the final in Rotterdam. Rumbutis scored 13.866 points, of which 8.4 was for execution, for his final routine. The score was lower than the 14.5 the Swede received in qualifying, but the 26-year-old placed seventh with Switzerland’s Noe Seifert (12.5) behind him. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Jingyuan of China defended his World Championship gold in the event with 15.733 points. Illia Kovtun, the Ukrainian who now represents Croatia, took silver with 14.9—narrowly ahead of Russia’s Daniel Marinov (14.866). The last time Sweden had a male gymnast in a World Championship final was in 1992, when Johan Jonasson reached the horizontal bar final.
