Norway’s royal family will once again spend a stressful Christmas holiday. King Harald V has been hospitalized since Monday, December 19, 2022 and is being treated intravenously. He should stay in the hospital for a few days.
Norway’s king will stay in hospital for a few days to treat an infection
King Harald V of Norway is once again in hospital. Since 2019, the 85-year-old King of Norway has been regularly hospitalized, for different reasons. His last hospitalization at Rikshospitalet, Oslo’s main hospital, was in early August 2022. He had been taken to hospital for an infection. His last major operation dates from October 2020, when he underwent heart surgery to replace an aortic valve.
This Monday, December 19, 2022, the Royal Court of Norway announced the bad news, five days before Christmas Eve. “The king has been diagnosed with an infection that needs to be treated with intravenous antibiotics”explains the Court in its brief statement. We also read that the king “will therefore stay at the Rikshospitalet for a few days”. His condition is stable.
The king of Norway continues repeated hospitalizations
King Harald had several hospital stays from the end of 2019 for dizziness, also coinciding with a period of overwork linked to the suicide of the ex-husband of his daughter and father of three of his granddaughters. Ari Ben ended his life on Christmas Day 2019. The days and weeks that followed were very difficult for the royal family and the king was hospitalized during the month of January 2020.
In addition to the replacement of his artificial valve for a valve made of biological material in the fall of 2020, he then underwent surgery in January 2021 on the tendon of the knee, an operation for which the doctors had initially planned two weeks of convalescence. King Harald had remained on sick leave until April 2021.
