Dodge County 5, Fargo South/Shanley 4

Brett Ludvigsen’s second goal and third point of the day, coming with just 3:26 to play in the third period, turned out to be the game-winning goal for Dodge County in a wild 5-4 victory against Fargo South/Shanley on the final day of Gold Division play at the Kiwanis Festival.

Dodge County’s Bronson Freerksen and South/Shanley’s Cail Astrup traded goals midway through the first period to make it a 1-1 game. That’s how the score remained until a fast-paced, back-and-forth third period.

The teams combined for seven goals in the final 14 minutes of the game, with Dodge County outscoring South/Shanley 4-3 in the final period.

A pair of unassisted goals by Gryffon Funke — his 25th and 26th of the season — made it 3-1 Wildcats 5:24 into the third.

The Bruins answered back at the 9:29 mark on Astrup’s second goal of the day, to pull within 3-2.

The teams then traded goals twice in a span of 3:04, with Ludvigsen scoring twice for Dodge County, including the goal that held up as the winner.

Jackson Roethler made 29 saves in the win for the Wildcats (7-5-0 overall), who are back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Chisago Lakes.

Tanner Nelson stopped all 15 shots he faced and Albert Lea ended its trip to the Kiwanis Festival on a high note, winning a Blue Divison game 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Graham Arena IV.

The Tigers (4-7-1) did a good job of possessing the puck and limiting Windom’s offensive opportunities. The Eagles managed just 15 shots on goal, with Nelson making 4 saves in the first period, 6 in the second and 5 in the third.

Tigers senior captain Eli Farris led the way offensively, with two goals and an assist. Farris broke a scoreless tie with just 14 seconds to play in the first period, a goal that held up as the game winner.

Luverne scored six times in the first period and dominated from start to finish in a 12-1 win against Austin on the final day of the Kiwanis Festival.

The No. 15-ranked Cardinals improved to 11-0-0 overall and remain the lone unbeaten team in the state in Class 1A.

Luverne didn’t clinch the Festival championship with the victory, though. It awaits the result of the Lourdes-La Crescent game. If La Crescent-Hokah wins, it and Luverne will finish the tournament with 3-0 records. That would invoke a tiebreaker; the first tiebreaker being fewest goals allowed in the Festival. Luverne allowed six over three games; La Crescent-Hokah had allowed just one entering its game against Lourdes today.

For a second consecutive day, Eli Krueger scored Austin’s lone goal. Zane Thoma made 35 saves for the Packers (3-8-0) in defeat.

Gavin Hoven stopped 14 shots to get the win for Luverne. Owen Sudenga had a hat trick and two assists, while Maddux Domagala had two goals and three assists.
