[월간수소경제 이상현 기자] Professor Kim Chang-hee of Korea Institute of Energy Technology announced on the 13th that he would hold the 15th International Energy Agency (IEA) Water Electrolysis (Green Hydrogen Production) Division Workshop. The workshop is co-hosted by the Korea Institute of Energy Research and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and will be held on Jeju Island for three days from the 18th to the 20th.

Professor Kim and Dr. Cho Hyun-seok of the Korea Institute of Energy Research have been serving as Korea’s representative members in the IEA Task 30 water electrolysis division, and succeeded in attracting the workshop, which had been held in most leading countries in the water electrolysis field, such as the United States and Europe, to Korea for the first time.

The main topics of the IEA Task30 water electrolysis division are alcala, PEM, and AEM water electrolysis, which are core technologies for green hydrogen, and high-temperature water vapor decomposition technologies. The IEA Water Electrolysis Division is a technology exchange activity that focuses on information sharing and technical cooperation among experts with knowledge and experience in water electrolysis technology and its use. They announced that they are working to accelerate the commercialization of water electrolysis technologies for green hydrogen production.

At this workshop, which is held twice a year, representatives from participating countries present on the current status of water electrolysis research, development and demonstration in each country and find solutions to common problems raised by utilizing various professional knowledge and resources.

This time, it was held in Korea for the first time, providing an opportunity for cooperation among companies related to water supply. Companies such as LG Chem, POSCO, GS EnC, Hanwha Solutions, and SK are scheduled to participate.

This workshop opens with a keynote speech by Jin-ho Park, Vice President of Korea Institute of Energy Technology, ‘Jeollanam-do’s Green Hydrogen Hub Strategy toward Carbon Neutrality’. Overseas speakers from the U.S. DOE, Japan’s Toyota, the European Energy Research Institute, and Germany’s Fraunhofer Research Institute, as well as domestic speakers including the Korea Institute of Energy Research and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, will give presentations on the water electrolysis technology being implemented at each institution.

At the Water Electrolysis Technical Committee, the core technologies of water electrolysis will be divided into four groups: porous separator, electrode catalyst, and alkaline, and in-depth discussions will take place on pending technical issues, standardization, certification, etc.

On the last day, the workshop will conclude with a visit to the 3.3MW green hydrogen production plant built in the Haengwon Complex in Jeju and a tour of domestic P2G infrastructure, followed by an individual visit schedule for cooperation with domestic research institutes.
