(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Song-ah = The Korean women’s soccer team reached the AFC Asian Cup final for the first time.

The women’s national team, led by coach Colin Bell (England), defeated the Philippines 2-0 in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup semi-final match against the Philippines on the 3rd at Siri Sib Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.

With this, Korea advanced to the Asian Cup final for the first time.

Korea participated in the Women’s Asian Cup, which started in 1975, in 1991, and before that, 3rd place in 2003 was the best performance ever.

At this year’s tournament, Korea passed Group C undefeated in 2nd place (2 wins, 1 draw) and then defeated powerhouse Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals on the 30th of last month, securing a place in the 2023 Australia and New Zealand finals.

In the semi-finals of the day, Cho So-hyeon (Tottenham)’s header in the 4th minute and Son Hwa-yeon (Incheon Hyundai Steel)’s additional goal in the 34th minute helped overthrow the Philippines, stepping on the final stage for the first time and challenging to the championship.

South Korea will face off against the winners of the semifinal match between China and Japan scheduled for tonight in the final to be held in Mumbai, India on the 6th.
