Kövér: Please don’t destroy the community! – 2024-04-11 15:03:13

Forum Central Europe in Dresden

Parliament President László Kövér expressed criticism of the current EU leadership at the Central Europe Forum in Dresden.

The Fidesz politician made an urgent appeal to stop the destruction of the EU and warned that the political elite was increasingly distancing itself from reality and the interests of the European population. “We Central Europeans are often lectured about what is expected of us instead of being listened to.”

That would be a deep break

The Hungarians’ expectation is not to transform the EU from a peace project into a war project, not from a democracy project into a dictatorship project and not from a welfare project into an impoverishment project. Kövér also expressed the fear that the EU could develop into an anti-Christian force, which would represent a deep break with two thousand years of European Christian tradition.

A catalog of demands

The Community is a voluntary association of sovereign and equal member states, the President of Parliament continued. Therefore, any attempt to exploit, reinterpret or even rewrite the EU treaties is illegitimate. Especially if this is accompanied by pressure and aggressive interference in the internal affairs of member states. What’s more, such attempts are not only illegitimate, but threaten to tear the EU apart. It’s not about making unity ever closer; rather, integration should serve to perfect national freedom.

Kövér demands that the EU be guided by Europe’s Christian roots, he is in favor of a ban on further joint borrowing, the European Commission must declare its political and ideological neutrality, and the members of the European Parliament should be delegated from the national parliaments. In addition, national parliaments must be allowed to block unacceptable EU legal standards. To protect the community, a common European armed force must be set up.

Dialogue of Central Europeans since 2011

The President of the Saxon State Parliament, Matthias Rössler, recalled that the “Forum Central Europe” initiative dates back to 2011. From the beginning, the aim was to stimulate a dialogue between Central Europeans, Germans, Austrians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Hungarians.
