Goodness Malayalam, thank you… The collective effort of the Malayalees to rescue Abdur Rahim, who has been in prison for the past 18 years after being sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, has finally achieved its goal. The Rahim Legal Aid Committee has also received Rs 34 crore as ransom. This ended up being the biggest crowdfunding that Malayalam has ever seen. The leadership of the committee announced in a press conference that the collection of funds has stopped and no one should send any more money.
The fund collection was completed with only three days left for the deadline to pay 34 crores. More than 30 crores have been collected through the app which started to make fundraising transparent. The fund raising target was achieved by adding the amount received offline.
The Saudi family has demanded 34 crore dia money for Rahim’s release. Around 22 crore rupees had flowed into the fund by last night itself. The remaining amount can be collected today. The Diya money should be handed over to the Saudi family on the 16th of this month. For more than one and a half months, the workers of the Rahim Legal Aid Committee working in the country and abroad for the release of Rahim had been desperately trying to collect money.
Till the evening of 27th Ramazan, 4.5 crores had come to the account of the committee trust in a month. But on the evening of 28th of Ramadan, the picture of the account changed. Crores poured in within minutes. 8 Crores on 28th of Ramazan, 13 Crores on 29th and 17 Crores on Eid night.
Zeenat Mansilil Abdurrahim, son of the late Muhammad Kuti, a native of Farook Kotampuzha in Kozhikode district, came to Riyadh on a house driver visa in 2006. Along with the driver’s job, the job was to take care of a differently-abled Saudi boy. Once Rahim gets jailed in an unfortunate incident while traveling in a car with a boy. While traveling, Rahim stopped the vehicle when the signal showed red light. At this time, the boy asked the vehicle to move forward. During this argument, the tube of the device attached to the body of the differently-abled child accidentally hit his arm and became detached. As a result, the child died.
Although the Saudi family was adamant about the death penalty until the last moment, the embassy was informed that they would be pardoned if they paid dia money as a result of the continuous efforts of the Indian Embassy and social workers. Funds raised in India will be transferred to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh through the Ministry of External Affairs.
