The world of high-octane K-Pop and demon hunting is set to expand as Netflix officially greenlit a sequel to its hit animated film, KPop Demon Hunters. The announcement, made this week, confirms what fans have long anticipated, particularly as the film heads into awards season with nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden” at the upcoming Oscars.
The original KPop Demon Hunters took audiences by surprise with its unique blend of music, animation, and action, quickly becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie ever with over 325 million views, according to Deadline. The film even achieved the rare feat of topping the domestic box office for two days with a $19 million debut in late August.
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the directorial duo behind the original, will return to helm the sequel, marking the first project under their exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership with Netflix focused on animation. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the film, building on the success of the first installment.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria emphasized the film’s global impact, stating, “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations and genres.”
The streaming giant has already begun expanding the KPop Demon Hunters universe beyond the initial film. Fans have been treated to karaoke versions of the film’s songs, music videos, and even themed merchandise, including a fireplace design inspired by the powers of the HUNTR/X girls. Recently, Netflix released a series of short-form videos – ranging from one to three minutes – showcasing “a collection of moments videos created by fans,” as reported by What’s on Netflix.
A Personal Story with Global Appeal
Maggie Kang expressed her pride in the project’s reception, stating, “I experience immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.” She added, “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
Chris Appelhans echoed this sentiment, describing the characters as “like family” and their world as “our second home.” He shared their enthusiasm for continuing the story, saying, “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together,” according to Netflix’s Tudum site.
Expanding the Universe
The sequel will once again follow the adventures of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, the central characters of KPop Demon Hunters. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, initial reports suggested a 2029 target, though Sony Animation has indicated the timeline may be longer.
The success of KPop Demon Hunters has highlighted the growing global influence of Korean pop culture, a phenomenon also explored in discussions surrounding the popularity of shows like Squid Game. As noted in ABC News, the film’s success is a testament to the dedication and creativity of Korean filmmakers.
As the team prepares to embark on the next chapter of this vibrant story, fans can anticipate a continuation of the innovative blend of music, animation, and compelling storytelling that made KPop Demon Hunters a global phenomenon. The future of the HUNTR/X girls looks bright, and Netflix is clearly committed to expanding this universe for years to come.
