Every day, it becomes more certain that 2023 will be the first year since the launch of iPad original, which took place in 2010, that we will not see any model of the tablet from Apple be updated with improvements. One of the people who also believes in this possibility is the analyst Ming-Chi Kuowhat shared last weekend some more predictions about this product line.
According to him, Apple really intends to upgrade all its tablets throughout the year. 2024with most of the improvements focused on displays and in new chips. Even so, shipping numbers for next year still generate around 52–54 million units — more than in 2023 (about 50 million), but less than the peak in 2022 (about 60 million), driven by remote work.
iPad Air
The first Apple tablet to receive new features in 2024 should be the iPad Air, last updated in March last year. According to Kuo, in addition to a new 10.9-inch model, the company is also planning to introduce a 12,9″ of the tablet which, like the smaller model, should reach the mass production phase yet in the first quarter of the year.
Unlike the current 12.9″ iPad Pro, however, this supposed 12.9″ iPad Air will not feature a Mini-LED display. Even so, it will still have a slightly better screen than the 10.9″ model, as it will benefit from the same backplane of oxide of the professional model. The smaller iPad Air, meanwhile, will continue to use a display with a backplane of the type a-Si.
iPad Pro
Expected to enter mass production between the end of the first quarter and the second quarter of 2024the new generation of iPad Pro should be the launch that will bring the greatest number of new features to Apple’s tablet line, starting with screens OLED instead of the current Mini-LED.
According to Kuo, the OLED screens of the new iPads Pro will use the same backplanes LTPO of the iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, which will bring improvements in both performance and energy consumption. The analyst also said that the tablets should feature the newly presented chip M3as well as an improved design (although he gave little information about this).
Unfortunately for us, however, all these new developments are likely to cause an increase in the prices of iPad Pros, especially if the price of the 10.9″ iPad Air remains unchanged. This is because, as noted by Kuo, Apple will probably want to maintain the price difference between the two lines of tablets, considering that the 12.9″ iPad Air will certainly cost more than the smaller model, reducing the current difference for the Pro models.
This possible higher price and the cannibalization caused by the 12.9″ iPad Air, according to the analyst, will probably slightly reduce the sales pace of professional models in 2024, which will be around 6-8 million units. It is worth noting that Apple’s original plan was to start production of the new iPads Pro in the first quarter, but problems involving the OLED screens ended up delaying the launch.
iPad “hope” & iPad mini
The Cupertino giant’s two most affordable iPad models will also not spend the year 2024 blank, although they have also been affected by delays.
O iPad Miniwhich has remained unchanged since 2021, should be updated at the end of the year, as its mass production was postponed until second half of 2024. Once again, the initial plan was for the new version of Apple’s most compact tablet to begin production in the first quarter of next year, which apparently will not be possible.
Just like the iPad mini, the 11th generation iPad would also have its mass production scheduled for the second semester 2024, which leads us to believe in a launch between September and October. The 9th generation iPad, already old from war, will enter the final moments of its production before the end of 2024, according to Kuo.
