In a column for Archyde.com, technology editor Sophie Lin argues that the Kurviger navigation app, with its “Extra Curvy” mode, offers a fundamentally different approach to route planning that prioritizes scenic and technical roads over pure efficiency.
A Curvier Approach to Navigation
According to Lin’s review, Kurviger distinguishes itself by offering a route planner with four distinct profiles: Fastest, Fast and Curvy, Curvy, and Extra Curvy. The “Extra Curvy” mode, in particular, is designed to prioritize winding and twisty roads, which Lin highlights as a “game-changer” for motorcyclists. While she notes this mode may not be ideal for those in a hurry, its strength lies in finding enjoyable detours and scenic routes. Unlike Google Maps, which treats winding roads as an inconvenience to be avoided, Kurviger positions them as a desirable feature, often offering better scenery and points of interest.
Customizing Journey Sections
The app’s flexibility extends beyond its route profiles, allowing users to customize individual sections of a journey. For instance, a traveler could opt for a fast route to a starting point and then switch to a more winding path for the scenic portion of the trip. Kurviger also offers automatic round-trip planning, enabling users to specify a starting point and desired travel distance to receive a circular route back to the origin. This feature is particularly useful for spontaneous adventures without a fixed destination. Lin also points out that Kurviger is more than just a route generator; it includes voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation, the ability to record rides, and downloadable offline maps.
A Standalone Navigation Solution
Lin observes that Kurviger functions as a standalone navigation product, eliminating the need to be used in conjunction with another service. The app integrates features such as petrol station searches and dynamic route recalculation, and it supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
