The first warning was made by the Argentine Society of Pediatrics in October of last year: missing pediatricians. Six months later, the situation has not improved and the doctors at the Sor María Ludovica Children’s Hospital in La Plata made a protest demanding solutions.
“Since last year we began to make hugs and public expressions because we had been noticing that the young professional after a training of 4 to 8 years, when taking office, crossed the highway and chose the capital hospitals because the remuneration is double,” said Zulma Fernández, head of the Medical Clinic and president of the Association of Professionals at the Sor María Ludovica Children’s Hospital, to MDZ.
The problem they face in the city of diagonals is the lack of professionals. The origin of this is the salary, according to Fernández because “the pocket salary of an incoming doctor is 210 thousand pesos while in the Garrahan Hospital It is between 400 and 500 thousand pesos (depending on guard duty on weekends) and as young professionals begin to migrate, all specialties begin to shrink”.
In this context, for the last three years, according to the doctor, “there has been a decrease of 50 professionals in all areas.” Something similar had marked the Argentine Society of Pediatrics last year in a statement when it disclosed “its concern about the number of vacancies that have remained unallocated in the Pediatric Clinic, Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care residences throughout the country.”
For the members of this society “it is an emerging, complex and multi-causal situation, where the impoverishment of the profession, the need for multiple employment and the different training contexts condition the decision of recently graduated professionals, which results in detriment of their training and pediatric care in general”.
Fernández expressed his anguish for the same: “We are very, very concerned because the decrease in the number of residents is a determining factor, because just as there is the external guard, there is the internal guard where a group of residents and internal doctors care for the patients boarding schools”.
The Sor María Ludovica de La Plata Children’s Hospital receives a large number of children as it is the only one on guard in that town after 8:00 p.m. On the other hand, it is a regional reference and many patients from small towns arrive there for assistance but currently reduced the number of beds available by 40%.
According to the latest numbers published by the Argentine Society of PediatricsLast year the country had 19,000 doctors in this specialty. To become a pediatrician, a person must study for approximately ten years, so low wages and poor conditions are expulsive.
