Lanterns Season 1: Hal Jordan and John Stewart Lead HBO’s New DC Mystery Series

Lanterns season 2 development is quietly moving forward behind the scenes at HBO, with production teams laying the groundwork for future stories even as the inaugural episodes prepare to debut.

The high-profile supernatural crime drama officially landed on HBO and HBO Max, marking DC Studios’ latest attempt to make the Green Lantern mythos feel dangerous, grounded, and genuinely mysterious. Even as audiences are just getting acquainted with the initial partnership of John Stewart and Hal Jordan, recent comments from the creators indicate that planning for the next phase is already underway.

Inside the Early Writers’ Room and Creative Shifts

Co-creator Damon Lindelof told Screen Rant at the Lanterns premiere that the first season was intentionally designed to tell a self-contained mystery rather than rely on constant cliffhangers. “We came into this with the sort of attitude that this was a mystery with a beginning, middle, and end… If it’s successful and people love it, there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons. But I think Chris Mundy has already started a new writers’ room, figuring out what new stories could be for Lanterns,” he explained.

That does not mean HBO has officially renewed the series yet. Lindelof’s statements suggest that the creative machinery is already moving regardless of immediate network greenlights. Alongside these early developments, behind-the-scenes adjustments have also reshaped the production lineup. Christopher Cantwell has joined Mundy as co-showrunner, giving a potential second season another experienced voice behind the scenes. Meanwhile, Lindelof is not expected to return in the same capacity, and Tom King is stepping away because of his DC Studios commitments to the animated Mister Miracle.

A Grounded Approach to the Green Lantern Mythos

Rather than immediately leaning into the cosmic spectacle traditionally associated with the Green Lantern Corps, the eight-episode narrative opens with the texture of a crime drama. This plot pairs Kyle Chandler’s seasoned Hal Jordan with Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, thrusting the unlikely Green Lantern duo into an Earthbound murder mystery carrying universal consequences.

This approach brings the narrative straight to Nebraska, following two very different Green Lanterns into a mystery that refuses to behave like a conventional superhero origin story. Utilizing dual timelines and a grounded investigative structure, the production draws frequent comparisons to crime thrillers like True Detective while keeping one foot firmly inside classic DC mythology.

The premiere makes that investigative angle especially clear as Hal and John begin probing a strange case, gradually peeling back the complex relationships and secrets surrounding the local town. The production features a robust supporting ensemble, with Kelly Macdonald starring as Sheriff Kerry, alongside Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Laura Linney, Ulrich Thomsen, and Nathan Fillion, giving the series significant dramatic muscle beyond its two lead actors.

What Comes Next for the Franchise

With season 1 underway, HBO has not yet formally announced an official second-season pickup.
