Renée Richards Speaks Out on Transgender Women in Women’s Sports

Nearly five decades after changing the landscape of professional sports, tennis pioneer Renée Richards is reflecting on her complex legacy and faulting herself for aspects of her journey. Now in her early 90s, the former player and respected eye surgeon became the first transgender woman to challenge exclusion policies in professional tennis, paving the way for future athletes amidst intense public scrutiny.

Richards’ groundbreaking legal battle against the U.S. Open in the 1970s is the focus of a recently released book, “Finding Renée Richards: The Groundbreaking Story of Tennis’s Trans Pioneer,” written by sports journalist Julie Kliegman. While Richards now identifies as a vocal advocate for transgender equality, she has candidly described her historic legal fight as having been motivated by personal interest rather than a calculated crusade for a broader movement, according to Kliegman’s reporting.

A Historic Legal Fight and Personal Reflections

Back in the 1970s, Richards balanced a demanding medical career with competitive tennis, utilizing a deceptive left-handed delivery that caught opponents off guard. Her journey to the courts, however, was fraught with resistance. Some tournaments permitted her entry while competitors withdrew in protest, and a high-profile tournament in Italy initially welcomed her before reversing its decision just before play began, excluding her after she failed a gender verification test in May 1977.

When the U.S. Open outright refused her registration, Richards took legal action. A court ultimately determined that the tournament had breached New York’s anti-discrimination statutes, granting her the right to compete. Although she was eliminated early in the singles draw that season, she reached the doubles final. She continued playing professionally before stepping away from the tour in 1981 at age 47. Her transgender identity had been publicly revealed earlier by journalist Richard Carlson, father of political commentator Tucker Carlson.

Navigating Complex Modern Parallels

In Kliegman’s examination of Richards’ life, the author notes that the trailblazing athlete gained limited acceptance during her playing days largely because she was viewed as an exception rather than part of a larger, systemic movement. The narrative also explores personal connections within the sport, noting that former tennis star Martina Navratilova—who later became a prominent critic of transgender women competing in female sports—held a favorable view of Richards on a personal level. Richards had previously coached Navratilova to two Wimbledon titles.

“It’s frequently simpler to embrace someone from an underrepresented community when you share a direct connection,” Kliegman noted, “rather than viewing trans individuals as a distant threat to opportunities meant for cisgender women.”

Today, Richards publicly opposes transgender female athletes participating in women’s competitions, maintaining a firm stance across all levels of play. “The principle applies across the board—whether in amateur or professional settings. The distinction doesn’t matter. It’s irrelevant if we’re talking about golf, tennis, basketball,” Richards stated in material covered by Today News. Kliegman argues that while discussions surrounding transgender athletes are deeply intertwined with broader pushbacks against transgender rights, Richards herself draws a sharp line between sports participation and other fundamental rights, emphasizing that compromises on sports will not automatically secure progress in gender-affirming medical care or restroom access.

Looking Ahead at the Evolving Landscape

As discussions surrounding gender categories in athletics continue to evolve globally, Richards’ retrospective look at her career provides a deeply personal window into the origins of a debate that remains intensely relevant today.
