When talking about Laphonza Butler, it’s worth mentioning a few firsts: The successor to the late Democrat Dianne Feinstein is the first openly lesbian black woman in the US Senate and the first queer senator to be sent from the state of California. The woman in her mid-40s will also be the only black senator in the 100-member body. In Feinstein she saw “a legendary figure for women in politics and across the country.”
