HOUSTON – A large fire broke out Friday afternoon at a Deer Park-area petrochemical plant.
A large flare inside the plant could be seen from several miles away. The plant is located east of the Houston metropolitan area.
According to initial inquiries, the conflagration occurred at Shell Deer Park Chemicals.
WHAT SHE SAID
The company issued a statement after 4 pm in which it stated: “We are experiencing a fire in one of our units. The incident is being handled within the limits of the plant, so there is no threat to the community. We apologize.” for the inconvenience this causes.”
According to Shell, the fire started at around 2:56 pm in the olefins unit due to the combustion of two types of diesel and gasoline.
What will be known once the investigation is done will be the reason for the fire, but the company clarified that, this Friday, “the main objective is the safety of people and the environment.”
No human casualties have been reported to lament.
Harris County Commissioner 2, Adrián González, said he contacted Shell and that no people were missing from the explosion. However, it is unknown if there are any injuries.
“We don’t know the cause of the fire, but Harris County firefighters will start the investigation as soon as the fire is out,” Garcia added.
The PEMEX refinery works next to the Shell chemical plant, which clarified that its refinery was not affected by the flames and that it provided assistance to Shell to help put out the flames.
The investigation is being handled by the Harris County Fire Department.
THERE WAS NO EXPLOSION: SHERIFF
However, at about 5:34 pm, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said five contractors were transported to area hospitals “as a precaution” and that none of them were seriously injured.
González added that the flames that are still visible are intended to take pressure off the unit that caught fire, but that the fire – which did not spread beyond the plant – has been controlled.
The bailiff stated that at no time was there an explosion.
