Large fire in a metal factory in Berlin

The fire started on the first floor of a factory building in Lichterfelde, southwest of the German capital. A technical room on the first floor was completely engulfed in flames, and the fire spread from there, according to a spokesperson for the fire service.

– The building is now completely engulfed in flames on four floors, says spokesperson Adrian Wenzel to the German newspaper Bild.

He says that it is not possible to get into the building. A fire crew of almost 130 works at the scene.

– We only extinguish from the outside. It is no longer possible to control the fire inside the building, says Wenzel.

There are also several chemicals stored in the building. The fire service has sent out a warning about dangerous smoke and asked residents to keep doors and windows closed.

– We can confirm that chemicals are also burning in the building. Sulfuric acid and copper cyanide are stored in the building. There is also a possibility that hydrogen cyanide will be released into the air together with the smoke, the fire service writes in the warning.

Bild writes that the factory belongs to the Diehl group and that the subsidiary Diehl Defence, which is a partner with the German armed forces, also has one of its head offices in the same street.

Diehl Defense produces, among other things, the air defense system IRIS-T, which is in use in Ukraine.

According to the spokesperson, no injuries have been reported, and all people in the area were evacuated.
