Lasagna Consumer Test: Ranking the Best Brands for Taste, Value, and Nutritional Value

2023-10-28 17:24:00

New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, we (re)tested lasagna.

The prepared lasagna is the subject of our big consumer test of the week: the winner is not the own brand! (COMPARATIVE)

Aspect of packaging: Intermarché is added this year to the selected brands. But the “Monique Ranou” brand doesn’t shake up the competition, it’s far too simple. Colruyt and Carrefour have changed their packaging. It’s still good for Carrefour, and much better than two years ago for Colruyt. For the rest, it’s exactly the same. For the big brand, we still don’t understand this flash green color…

Appearance of the product: Aldi is not doing better than in 2021, it is still just as liquid. For Lidl, it was the same thing, it was even worse than the first time. Intermarché is not a good student. It was less liquid, but it really lacked meat and it didn’t smell much. We always prefer Delhaize and Carrefour for the same reason: there is much more meat than in other lasagnas.

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score B for everyone, and even A for Delhaize.

The big brand test: autumn is back, the raclette season is launched (COMPARATIVE)

Readability of the label: Delhaize and Aldi are lagging behind, it was far too small and the information too hard to find in almost continuous text. For the rest, it was quite good, and very good for the big brand, always so clear. It’s rare enough to be stressed.

Taste: Intermarché and Lidl are the worst performers of the week. It was too liquid and too low in meat, and above all, it tasted of spices more than anything else… Aldi, Come a Casa and Colruyt do better with something more balanced in terms of taste. It lacked a little meat, but it was very good. Finally, Carrefour and Delhaize remain at the top of the ranking, with lasagnas that meet all the required qualities.

The good surprises come from Carrefour and Delhaize, with lasagnas well balanced between meat, tomato sauce, spices and pasta. Come a Casa and Colruyt are a notch below, but the disappointments come from Aldi and Lidl which sell lasagne that is too liquid and where you look for the meat.

The big test of brands: the best purchases so as not to lose your mind… from Berlin (COMPARATIVE)

Value for money: the advantage of repeating this test two years later is to update the prices. To begin with, let’s mention the price at Intermarché: €2.29 per tray. For the rest, here is the evolution: Come a Casa (€4.25, +18.38%), Carrefour (€2.49, +19.14%), Colruyt (€2.29, +9.57 %), Lidl and Aldi (€1.49, +29.57%). The largest increases are therefore sanctioned. The only store that has not increased its prices is Delhaize, and that is worth noting.
