Latest Updates on Energy Market: Gas Prices Drop to 10-Year Low & Tips for Energy Contracts

After a long energy crisis which saw gas prices reach records, we remain worried about seeing the slightest element restart the machine. In recent months, the good news has continued, with a constant drop in gas prices, which has returned to a level similar to that of 10 years ago. At the beginning of January, we fell back to €30 per megawatt hour. This remains more expensive than before the crisis, but the gap narrows if we take inflation into account. We must not forget that prices were surprisingly low just before the start of the crisis.

But now that temperatures are falling and demand for gas is de facto increasing, should we expect prices to drop? Currently, no sign of an increase on the markets. It must be said that this cold episode should not last too long and that all other factors which can increase prices (war in Ukraine, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, strikes in a supplier country, etc.) remain stable for the moment.

More good news on the energy markets: “We have returned to the same price level as 10 years ago”

And what about our energy contracts? It is good to take a look at the current prices. Prices for the month of January have been updated to take into account the price drop for the month of December. For those who have a variable contract, the price reduction is automatic. For those who have a fixed contract, you really need to think about comparing. Those who signed a contract in September or October to protect themselves for the winter risk paying too much compared to current prices. It is therefore a good idea to use a comparison, change supplier or negotiate with your current supplier to update your price.

Finally, other good news, the price of fuel oil at the end of November, the price of a liter of fuel oil was €1.02/L, a rate which fell to €0.89 this Tuesday, the cheapest price since the start of the month of July. Now is the time to fill your tank if you fear cold days.
