Maduro will be the guarantor of a future dialogue between Colombia and a guerrilla
Venezuela joins Chile and Cuba as a guarantor of future peace talks between the Colombian authorities and the ELN guerrillas.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday accepted that his country be part of the guarantors of future peace talks between the Colombian authorities and the ELN guerrillas, at the request of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, the two governments announced.
Shortly after restoring diplomatic relations with Caracas, Gustavo Petro demanded that Venezuela join “as a guarantor country” in negotiations with the last recognized guerrillas in Colombia, in a public letter published on Tuesday. “Venezuela accepts the role of guarantor (…) Of course!” replied Nicolás Maduro.
Venezuela thus joins Chile and Cuba, which have agreed to take part in this peace process.
Resume negotiations
Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president, sworn in at the beginning of August, reactivated contacts with the ELN in order to resume negotiations interrupted in 2019 by the government of his predecessor Iván Duque, following an attack on a school of police who left 22 dead, in addition to the assailant.
Emissaries of the new Head of State have already met in Havana with representatives of the Guevarist guerrillas.
Gustavo Petro has shown his willingness to negotiate with the ELN and the dissidents of the ex-FARC (who reject the 2016 peace agreement with this Marxist guerrilla), but also to discuss with the drug traffickers their surrender to justice.
