Latvian athletes are currently competing across 12 diverse sports and disciplines at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, where wushu competitor Roberts Ritenbergs secured an eighth-place finish in the finals.
The Fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games run until November 13 in Senegal’s capital, marking the first time the Olympic movement has hosted its marquee youth event on the African continent. LSM reported that Latvia is represented by 18 athletes competing across 12 distinct sports and disciplines.
Roberts Ritenbergs opened his campaign in the wushu competition by posting the seventh result among 12 competitors during the initial routine, according to Olimpiade.lv. Ritenbergs later addressed his performance, stating, Ja godīgi, man liekas, ka es varētu izdarīt daudz, daudz labāk, bet daudzkur pazaudēju līdzsvaru, un es galīgi neesmu apmierināts, bet ļoti ceru, ka nākotnē es to varēšu izlabot.

The Sali region hosts water and beach sports including coastal rowing, beach wrestling, sailing, and triathlon. The Dakar region handles 3×3 basketball, breaking, swimming, road cycling, taekwondo, and athletics, while Diamniadju stages boxing and wushu events.
In coastal rowing preliminary heats, Kļujeva finished with a time of three minutes and 16.63 seconds, trailing the leading time set by Switzerland’s Tanja Brendle by nearly 19 seconds, Sportacentrs.com reported. That performance placed Kļujeva 21st among 31 participants. The top eight competitors automatically secured berths in the round of 16, while remaining athletes advanced to a second qualification round.
Meanwhile, LSM noted that the 3×3 basketball team advanced directly to the knockout rounds as the top seed from their initial group after defeating both Puerto Rico and Singapore. The team subsequently faced Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals.
