Lead developer gives controversial reason for failure

Days Gone director and writer John Garvin cites a controversial reason for the lackluster enthusiasm for his game. “Woke critics” who “didn’t feel like it” were to blame for the title.

In addition, according to him, technical problems contributed to the fact that Days Gone did not lead to the hoped-for success. He identifies the reasons for the failure in three very specific points.

Days Gone: “Woke critics” were “not interested” in the game

Garvin outdid his comments in response to a fan’s question Twitter (via game bytes). He wanted to know from the lead developer why he thinks the post-apocalyptic PS4 title received so little praise when it was first released in 2019.

In response, Garvin cites three solid reasons: First, the game would have had to struggle with technical problems in terms of bugs, streaming and frame rates. Also, some of Days Gone’s reviewers wouldn’t even bother to actually play the game. And last but not least, there were even a few “woke” critics who couldn’t handle “a rugged white biker looking at his date’s butt,” as Garvin continues.

With the term “woke” he clearly refers to the term that has been used more and more often in the past for those people who are aware of social injustices such as racism, sexism or other forms of discrimination at the lowest level. In recent times, however, the word has been used mainly by more conservative people, sometimes also by the right-wing scene, as a kind of collective term for all those who represent progressive political ideas.

Community opposes it

With his controversial claim, Garvin drew both fans and media representatives who spoke out strongly against the statements. His tweet triggered some negative reactions, which above all call his statement about the “woken critics” into question.

In addition, the fans keep giving counter-examples: While Days Gone allegedly received negative reviews due to its unbridled presentation, Red Dead Redemption 2 celebrated global success just a few months earlier, while Rockstar Games was also not stingy with racist, sexist or other unacceptable scenarios in the game.

The second part of the western epic pulled away with a Metacritic rating of 97, while Days Gone only managed a comparatively weak 71 comes. and how Days Gone performed in our testof course we don’t want to withhold it from you either.
