MADRID (AP) — Girona had to settle for a 0-0 draw on Sunday against last-place Almería in the Spanish League and missed the opportunity to distance itself from Real Madrid at the top, with its rival having to play in the Super Cup final Spanish.
The Catalan team was within reach of opening a three-point gap against Almería, the only club that has not won this season in the League. But the draw left Girona one point ahead of Madrid.
The meringues faced Barcelona in the Super Cup final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, later. Their league match in Getafe this weekend will be played in a few weeks.
Girona played with 10 men from the 80th minute after midfielder Aleix García was sent off with a straight red card after committing a foul to stop a counterattack.
Almería generated several scoring chances during the match. Girona offered one of its worst versions of the campaign and barely had a shot on goal.
It was only the second time this season that Girona finished a game without scoring. The other was in the 3-0 defeat against Madrid in September, their only defeat in all competitions.
The team led by Míchel Sánchez has the best attack in the League with 46 goals, six more than Madrid, in its surprising campaign for the title.
“The best news of the game is the point. Almería has surpassed us and has been better,” said Míchel. “We have not been fine with the ball or in the pressure, with many distances between the lines. We have achieved a point that is good, which makes us leaders.”
