While the party is in free fall in the polls, here is information from Newspaper which will not restore the image of the Open VLD. In this document, we can see an unflattering portrait of political figures painted. Bart De Wever is thus presented as a “vindictive crier, anchored in the past and who is always looking for scapegoats. He is the ‘Flemish Magnet’ in the sense that he insults others, but helping the country is not his priority”.
Conner Rousseau also takes it for his rank. He is described as “a handsome guy but he is a populist clown and a narcissistic wimp”.
Vlaams Belang leader Tom Van Grieken is a “right-wing authoritarian asshole, a racist and a hateful extremist. A wicked man who has dangerous plans.”
Conversely, Alexander De Croo, Open VLD Prime Minister, is described as “a wise, competent and strong leader. His party is there for people who want a better life.”
According to our colleagues from Nieuwsblad, this document actually comes from a study commissioned last March, when Egbert Lachaert was still president. “The document must have leaked from a meeting of spokespersons and ended up in the hands of a collaborator who released it,” indicates a liberal source to the Flemish media.
The marketing office of Mark Thiessen, former advisor to former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, was responsible for this study. Ultimately, this has not really been taken advantage of by the Open VLD since no executive has yet used the qualifiers presented above. But this leak is creating unease, including within the party itself, already in crisis and which will have to elect a new president this weekend.
