British justice has ordered the psychiatric hospitalization for an indefinite period of an 18-year-old young man behind major computer hackings, including that of the publisher of the famous “Grand Theft Auto” (GTA) who had clouded the launch of the game.

Arion Kurtaj, 18, was part of the Lapsus$ computer hacking group, according to the accusation, as was another teenager a year his junior who was tried alongside him in London.

His internment was ordered on Thursday by a court in Guildford, south of London, according to police.

After a two-month trial, the young man was declared responsible for 12 offenses at the end of August, including computer hacking, blackmail, fraud and refusal to comply.

He notably blackmailed Rockstar Games, the publisher of GTA, by threatening to “leak the stolen source code for the sequel to GTA on internet forums”, according to the indictment.

The specialized site PC Gamer revealed in September 2022 the publication of a file containing 90 “GTA VI” videos on gamer forums. Using the pseudonym “teapotuberhacker”, the hacker promised to “leak more information soon”.

The affair had turned into “bad buzz” for Rockstar Games, completely ruining the launch strategy of the game, a real money machine as popular as it was criticized for its violence.

Psychologists considered that Mr. Kurtaj was not capable of being found guilty or not guilty; the jury therefore only had to establish whether he had committed the alleged acts.

The second teenager, also a member of the Lapsus$ hacker group, was found guilty of hacking processor manufacturer Nvidia in February 2022 before threatening to leak key elements of the company. He was also found guilty of fraud, blackmail and hacking.

The 17-year-old young man, whose identity has not been revealed for legal reasons, is the subject of reintegration measures, according to the City of London police.

“This case serves as an example of the dangers that young people can be lured into online and the serious consequences it can have for a person’s future,” said Commissioner Amanda Horsburg of the County Police. Quoted.

“Many young people want to explore how technologies work and their vulnerabilities,” she continued, “unfortunately, the digital world can also be tempting to young people for the wrong reasons.”
