People’s Power has launched an offensive against Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, by releasing a past photo of him smoking in a restaurant.
In a photo posted on their SNS on the 14th by Lee Ki-in, a member of the same party as Kim Woong People’s Power National Assembly member and Seongnam City Councilor, Lee and his party were enjoying a dinner at a restaurant. In the photo, Lee was exposed holding a cigarette in his hand or biting it in his mouth. Candidate Lee served as Seongnam Mayor from 2010 to 2018, and the People’s Power estimated that this photo was taken in April 2014. This means that candidate Lee smoked in a restaurant during the mayor.

As the photo spread, among netizens on the same day, Lee’s past remarks that he did not drink and smoke were re-examined. Previously, on December 8, last year, candidate Lee posted his 20th web autobiography on Instagram, titled ‘How did you not go wrong?’ Candidate Lee argued in this post, “Unlike what boys usually do, I didn’t drink or smoke.” Then, as for the reason why she did not deviate from the ‘boyfriend days’, she said, “It was because she had a mother who loved her abundantly.” Rep. Lee Ki-in also sarcastically said, “I didn’t drink and smoke because of my mother, but now do you smoke?”

In relation to Candidate Lee’s smoking in restaurants, the people’s power was criticized as “obviously illegal and moral hazard of local government heads.” Hwang Gyu-hwan, a spokesperson for the People’s Power Election Headquarters, commented on the same day, “According to the National Health Promotion Act, 150 square meters or more from December 2012, 100 square meters or more from January 2014. “It is impossible to confirm the area of the restaurant, but if it is more than 100 square meters, it is clearly illegal for this candidate to smoke.”

“Candidate Lee should be honest in front of the public and apologize to the public about how the smoking was done in the restaurant in the photo and, if true, whether it was a violation of the law,” he said.
Meanwhile, on June 27, 2013, Candidate Lee shared an article titled ‘Smoking Enforcement at 9366 Public Facilities in Seongnam City’ on his Twitter account and posted an article saying, “Now, be careful when smoking in public places.”
