Less than 100 plants in the wild have been listed as critically endangered, and 1,000 birds have been artificially bred

The Endemic Organism Research and Conservation Center said today that there are fewer than 100 Orchid vulgaris (Niaozaihua) in the wild, and the “2017 Taiwan Red Book List of Vascular Plants” is listed as a national critically endangered level (CR). After the discovery, the repopulation was carried out, and 1,000 plants have been bred and planted back. The Center for Research and Conservation of Endemic Organisms of the Agricultural Committee of the Executive Yuan released a news today that Arundina graminifolia is a plant of the Orchidaceae family, also known as Bamboo Leaf Orchid. Originally widely distributed in the mountainous areas below 1000 meters above sea level in the central and northern Taiwan, or on the sunny grasslands, fields, fields, or rocky terrain beside the flat roads, it is often mixed with grasses.

There are less than 100 wild birds that have been listed as critically endangered in the country, and 1,000 birds have been artificially bred.

The Special Health Center also said that in recent years, due to habitat development and collection pressure, there are few reed orchids left, and the “2017 Taiwan Red Book List of Vascular Plants” is listed as a national critically endangered level (CR), and it is urgent to strengthen conservation and maintenance.

Zhang Lihui, an assistant researcher at the Special Health Center, explained in a telephone interview with a reporter from the Central News Agency that the survey before 2017 showed that there were 250 plants left, and in 2019, the number continued to drop to less than 100 plants, from widespread distribution to rare and endangered, showing that the remaining species It was in urgent need of rescue.

She said that during the above-mentioned operation, in 2018, in the Gongliao water terraces, there were still wild plants of reed grass orchids alive, so at the invitation of the external contact window of the Hehe production team “Lihehe Small Barn”, the local reeds Grass orchids have developed a recovery action.

The Special Health Center said that during the three-year period of the promotion of relevant actions, in addition to collecting local plant phenology and biology-related data, it also promoted the collection of seed sources, microclimate monitoring, and research on reproductive technology, and carried out seedling breeding, domestication and introduction. After waiting for the work, in early November 2021, with the cooperation of the Tesheng Center, the Forestry Bureau and the Gongliao Water Terrace Community, 1,000 reed grass orchids, which were propagated and cultivated in the original place, were finally planted back in the Gongliao Water Terrace.
Zhang Lihui also said that the first-year survival rate of artificial reproduction and restoration to the original place is usually relatively low, because the plants have to adapt to different growth environments. Special Health Center will also continue to monitor.

In addition, she added that there were also 3 native sites of Orchid reedae, which are Shuangxi Taiping in New Taipei, Dongyan Mountain in Taoyuan, and Great Lake in Miaoli.
