Lexar has unveiled its Thor Ultra series, a new lineup of PCIe 5.0 NVMe solid-state drives reaching sequential read speeds of up to 11 GB/s. Available in capacities from 512 GB to 4 TB, the M.2 2280 drives utilize a DRAM-less architecture and a 6nm controller to manage thermal output and power efficiency.
Architectural Choices in the Gen 5 Storage Wars
The consumer NVMe market has spent the last year grappling with the thermal realities of fifth-generation PCI Express interfaces. High-speed controllers often require bulky heatsinks or active cooling fans to avoid throttling under sustained I/O loads. With the Thor Ultra range, Lexar sidesteps traditional DRAM-heavy controller layouts in favor of a DRAM-less design built on a 6nm process node. Performance figures vary significantly by capacity. The 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB iterations achieve up to 11 GB/s in sequential reads and 10 GB/s in sequential writes. Meanwhile, the entry-level 512 GB model scales back to 9.9 GB/s for reading and 5 GB/s for writing. Random access metrics show similar scaling, with the series reaching up to millions of IOPS in read operations and millions of IOPS in write operations depending on the specific drive capacity chosen.

The Thor Ultra lineup outlines total bytes written (TBW) thresholds that align with current industry baselines for the Gen 5 segment.
