Netflix is returning to Hillman College with a new generation of students, releasing an official trailer and premiere date of September 24 for the A Different World
sequel series, which features returning legacy characters alongside fresh faces.
The fall semester at Hillman College is officially back in session, bringing a wave of nostalgia and fresh campus drama. Netflix has released the first-look trailer and new production photos for its upcoming A Different World sequel series, which is scheduled to drop all 10 episodes globally on September 24.
The upcoming single-camera comedy shifts away from the multi-camera format of the original run and plays out without a studio audience. Instead, the narrative unfolds set against the rituals, humor, and nuances of an HBCU, grounding the modern continuation in the familiar halls of Dwayne and Whitley’s alma mater.
Deborah Wayne Steps Onto Campus as Hillman Royalty
At the center of the new chapter is Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. As the youngest daughter of series royalty Whitley Gilbert-Wayne and Dwayne Wayne—portrayed once again by Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison—Deborah arrives on campus carrying considerable family expectations.
The trailer captures her immediate academic and social pressures right out of the gate.
Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride noted that shaping Deborah required a deliberate approach. Pride told What's on Netflix that it was important to craft a character who’s trying to figure it out, who’s a little messy, who’s a little all over the place because this is a character that a lot of young people can relate to.
Debbie Allen Returns Alongside Familiar Hillman Faces
Original series director Debbie Allen rejoins the fold as an executive producer and director for three episodes, including the premiere. Allen also steps back on screen as academic advisor Dr. Langhorne, sharing a sharp exchange with Deborah in the trailer.

When Dr. Langhorne questions her presence, Deborah attempts a speech about her parents’ devotion to Hillman, only for the advisor to cut straight through it. You didn’t get in anywhere else, did you?
Dr. Lanhorne said, leaving Deborah to confirm the truth quietly.
Alongside Guy, Hardison, and Allen, a substantial roster of original cast members is confirmed to reprise their roles on campus. The returning alumni list features Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, and Glynn Turman as Col. Bradford Taylor.
A New Generation Meets Returning Legacies
The freshman class rounding out the campus dynamic introduces a diverse cross-section of student experiences. The student roster includes Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-generation criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete choosing legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a psych major skilled at fixing everyone else’s problems; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small-town student defining her values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a fashion entrepreneur.

For the actors stepping back into their iconic roles, the transition felt immediate. Jasmine Guy told Tudum that the minute the cast gathered, they picked up right where they left off as if they had never departed.
Production Roots and Creative Vision
The path to the screen involved a deliberate pilot process. Production on the pilot order took place in June 2025 in Atlanta following initial development announcements in the summer of 2024. Netflix’s decision to order a pilot remains an uncommon step for its comedy slate.
The creative team behind the revival brings deep personal ties to the franchise. Original writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner. For the Bythewoods, who have been married since 1998, returning to Hillman represents a true homecoming.
It was where we got our start as writers and where we found each other,
the Bythewoods said, describing the revival as a continuation of a personal legacy rooted in love, purpose, and possibility.
