2023-12-05 17:26:10

The Libeert chocolate factory in Comines is 100 years old! For four generations, it has been producing the tastiest and crunchiest chocolate figurines. To crown this anniversary, Prince Laurent visited the family business today. With the push of a button, he commissioned a completely new packaging line. Each year, thanks to an investment of around 4.5 million euros, up to 40 million chocolate bars can be packaged in an even more sustainable way.

What started in 1923 with an SME in Iseghem has today become a global player in the chocolate sector and the oldest (large) chocolatier in Belgian hands. More than 5,000 tonnes of chocolate are produced there each year through some 60 million figurines and bars. If you give a chocolate figurine for Saint Nicholas, Christmas or Easter, there is a good chance that it will come from Libeert. These figurines are sold in Belgium, but also in France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and, since last year, the United States. Chocolate bars produced for other high-end commercial brands and A brands are sold practically throughout Europe and even in Australia.

“Even though we are celebrating our 100th anniversary today, we consider ourselves first and foremost a dynamic and very ambitious start-up. This is why we continue to invest massively in our production and innovate with new flavors and original figurines. But above all, we want to remain a family business for family moments that make young and old smile,” says Lily Libeert.

With her sister and two brothers, she forms the fourth generation of the family business. Lily (38) and Georges (35) are co-CEOs, Désirée (39) is the director of human resources and Jerome (35) is responsible for production.

The prince Laurent inaugurates a new packaging line. “Even more sustainable packaging”

For a centenarian, Libeert remains extremely active. The family business has recently invested in additional storage solutions as well as a brand new 4.5 million euro packaging line. With the press of a button, Prince Laurent started it up today. It will make it possible to wrap and package more chocolate bars much more quickly: around forty million bars per year.

“It is important that the chocolate figures and bars are packaged quickly and well. This prevents the chocolate from being exposed to air and light. This is the only way to guarantee optimal quality” adds Lily Libeert. “In addition, it becomes possible to do this with even more sustainable packaging and with a better guarantee of quality. Each package is in fact checked individually.”
