The court sentenced Roni Chowdhury alias Babu alias Grenade Babu to life imprisonment for killing businessman Jahangir Hossain Kochi in Khulna. At the same time, he has been fined 50 thousand taka, in default of which he has been sentenced to 1 year rigorous imprisonment.
Judge SM Ashiqur Rahman of Khulna’s Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court announced the verdict on Monday (March 27).
Meanwhile, the judge acquitted 8 accused in the case due to lack of evidence.
The acquitted accused are – Sohail, Sumon Sheikh alias Bom Sumon, Kala Roni alias Hasibur Rahman, Kajal alias Dada alias Habibur Rahman Kajal, Riaz Mir, Sohag, Zahid Ghazi and Zia Ghazi.
Grenade Babu was not present while the other accused were present in the court when the verdict was pronounced. He is absconding.
In the court, the lawyer of the state side, Kazi Sabbir Ahmed, confirmed the verdict.
According to the source of the case, Jahangir Hossain, a resident of Kochi Tank Road, Hakim Md. Son of Elias Hossain. On the evening of June 10, 2010, the miscreants called Kochi. At around 6:30 in the evening, the miscreants cut and injured Kochi with sharp weapons when they went to the north side of Razia Manzil on Shamsur Rahman Road in the city. Later the miscreants fled on a motorcycle. Later, police rescued Kochi from the spot and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared the baby dead.
The day after the incident, Ilyas Hossain, the father of the deceased Kachi, became the plaintiff and filed a murder case with Khulna Sadar police station, naming 6 people including Roni Chowdhury Babu alias Grenade Babu and some unknown persons as accused. Later on November 2 of the same year, Grenade Babu, the main accused in the case, was arrested by the police. After that, Grenade Babu confessed his responsibility in the murder in the court of Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Swapan Kumar and gave a statement under Section 164. Grenade Babu cited a Kochi-like dispute over the sharing of drug money as the reason for the murder.
Investigation officer of the case, SI Amirul Islam of the Intelligence Branch filed a charge sheet against 9 people including Grenade Babu on July 5, 2011. Twelve of the 26 testified during the trial.
