Lifting in the ancient theater of Delphi [Εικόνες] 2024-04-12 10:31:34

As mentioned by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, in a related announcement, the works of the restoration of the monument are being intensified, following the unanimously positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council, on the geotechnical study and the implementation study of the restoration of the eastern wall of the theater.

The studies were prepared as a follow-up to the final restoration study and the rainwater runoff study of the theater and the northern slope, which is the main means of supporting the sloping ground of the theater. The restoration project of the Ancient Theater of Delphi is implemented based on a cultural development program agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Region of Central Greece.

“The archaeological site of Delphi, which is unique in importance and of international scope and reference, is in absolute need of constant care and attention, in order to be protected from the phenomena of the evolving climate crisis” noted Ms. Mendoni and emphasized the “non-negligible parameter” that is the fact that tectonic faults develop in the wider area, such as the Delphi fault and the Kerna fault. “Given the specific geological background, which is characterized by a tendency for landslides, the additional loading from rainwater increases the erosion over time, resulting in the burden on the ancient theater” Ms. Mendoni noted and pointed out that in combination with the protection, maintenance works and restoration of the individual monuments and the archaeological site, against the effects of the climate crisis, the upgrading of the services provided in the archaeological site of Delphi and the renovation and upgrading of the infrastructure of the European Cultural Center which the Ministry of Culture is implementing, “we ensure the protection of the top this UNESCO World Heritage site. We strengthen its function as an important cultural destination and development resource, at local and national level, but also the preservation of the character of Delphi, as a point of reference for world culture”.

As stated in the announcement, the main pathology of the theater is related to geological/geotechnical conditions that have caused sliding and subsidence of a large part of the seats of the stands that have been formed mainly on ancient embankments. In the final restoration study, it is proposed, among other things, the restoration of steps and seats and, where appropriate, their reduction, completion of the hollow with scattered or new pews as well as the damaged eastern part of the diazoma, as well as repositioning the stones in their original position and completion of the walls with scattered or new natural stones.
