Liga MX Quotient Table: Which Teams Will Pay the Fines for Clausura 2024?

2024-03-28 11:58:59

There are still five games left to conclude the Clausura 2024, but the fines for the teams with the worst quotient in the Liga MX are practically decided and once again it will be between the same teams that have suffered with the results in recent years, so once More Tijuana, FC Juárez and Mazatlán are shaping up to be the ones that disburse 80, 47 and 33 million pesos.

Necaxa shook off this problem with that victory against Cruz Azul on Matchday 12 at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium. Thanks to the work Eduardo Fentanes has done with the Rays, they were able to avoid the fine with five games remaining.

That is why the fight has only focused on four clubs since no matter how many points they obtain until the end of Clausura 2024, there will be no way for them to avoid the sanction that is imposed on the teams with the worst average in Liga MX, in instead of a demotion.

Why are fines paid?

Before starting the 20-21 season, in addition to confirming that there would be no promotion and relegation from Liga MX, the last three teams in the percentage table would have to pay a fine for being among the worst in that classification.

Since the 91-92 season, the quotient table was included that determined the worst team and therefore the one that was relegated. It considers the data from the last three years to build the classification between the total points obtained between the number of games played.

Today the table is used to determine who pays the fine.

At the end of the 23-24 season, Liga MX will have raised a total of 720 million pesos since 20-21.

Why are the fines already defined?

There are still five games and 15 points to be played, assuming that FC Juárez, Tijuana and Mazatlán could obtain all those points in dispute, there would be no way for them to reach Necaxa, which prior to Date 13 occupies position 15 in the Quotient Table of the MX League.

Necaxa could lose all of its games ahead and would be left with 112 points, so its quotient would be 1.0980, a figure that none of the bottom three can reach. There is only one club that could get involved in this problem if it has a bad closing and those are the Gallos de Querétaro who have a more volatile average.

Mazatlán is in 16th place in the Quotient Table, assuming that it adds the 15 points in dispute, its maximum average would be 1.0882, insufficient to avoid the fine

Tijuana is in 17th place in the Quotient Table and its maximum aspiration is 1.0588, it could not even reach Mazatlán by adding all 15 points ahead in case the Cañoneros also added all the points.

Furthermore, both clubs face each other on Matchday 13, so there will be no way for both to get the 15 points in dispute. That meeting could also define which of the two will pay the most fine.

Once again FC Juárez will pay a fine

Finally, there is the case of FC Juárez, a club that has just won its first match of Clausura 2024 in one of the pending duels of the League after beating Puebla at the Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium.

FC Juárez could also avoid paying the worst fine as long as it also defeats Tijuana in its direct duel and gets as many points as possible and the Xolos have a disastrous close.

The Braves are the club that has paid the most money in fines with 130 million pesos in just 5 years since they began their time in Liga MX. Although he does not know relegation, the Bravos board has paid a fine twice in his short stay in the Maximum Circuit.

It should be remembered that in 2019 Veracruz was disaffiliated and in 2020 the promotion-relegation was canceled due to the pandemic, in which cases Juárez did not pay a fine. Furthermore, in 2022-2023 he also had a good campaign and avoided the fine.
