Jack the Ripper was a serial killer who murdered at least five women who worked as prostitutes in London’s East End in 1888. He was never identified or caught.
Now, in a viral TikTok video, Kiki Schirr (@schirrgenius) has shared her theory on who the infamous killer was, and it’s all based on a famous painting.
The lengthy clip, which has been viewed more than 13 million times, begins with Schirr saying: “We all know that Jack the Ripper killed women, especially those he probably passed off as women of the night.”
He then explains why he believes French painter Edgar Degas was the man behind the crimes.
Schirr claimed that by the time of the murders, Degas had come to “really hate women”.
He explained: “He was always a bit of a misogynist, but he debased into a horrible, awful, misanthrope of a person that people didn’t want to be around.”
He then added that Degas was “rich, well connected and living in Paris, which was a short train ride from London where the murders took place”.
The artist was apparently known to travel frequently between the two cities and could easily make the journey to commit the murders.
Interestingly, at the height of the Jack the Ripper murders, Degas is recorded taking a trip to the South of France.
And Kiki revealed that she concluded that the famous painter was the killer. “He was obsessed with drawing ballerinas. Many of the ballerinas were also prostitutes. In his works there were dark shadows in the background, representing the men trying to get dates with them.
Look at how many of his paintings focus on the female body and have no face. Look at all his pastels, where the darkest line on the woman is the line that cuts through her neck. And this artist managed to escape?”
