A recent study indicated that women who are prone to migraines are more likely to develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
According to Insern, approximately 20 percent of women suffer from migraines, while 61,000 new cases of cancer will be recorded annually in France, according to the Cancer Center in 2023. But what if there is a link between them?
Researchers tried to answer this question through a new study, the results of which were published in the journal BMC Cancer.
Accordingly, the researchers started from previous studies that dealt with a large number of people who suffer from migraines. A distinction has been made between two types: the first is migraine accompanied by aura, which is a recurring headache that occurs after or with sensory disturbances called aura, and migraine without it (also known as common migraine).
The researchers concluded that the number of women who had breast cancer was 69 out of 123,000 (some types of cancer are sensitive to hormones, meaning that cancer cells have hormonal receptors that detect progesterone and estrogen).
This is the most common type of breast cancer, and represents about 80 percent of cancer cases, as more than 21,000 cases of breast cancer with negative estrogen receptors are recorded.
By studying patient records, researchers found that migraines are linked to the risk of breast cancer. When a woman is susceptible to migraines, her risk of breast cancer increases, but not of the hormone-sensitive type.
The researchers found that women who have a history of migraines should be urged to undergo regular breast cancer screening in order to obtain an early diagnosis, and most importantly, receive appropriate treatment.
