(CNN Spanish) — The Argentine star Lionel Messi published a video on his Instagram account on Friday in which he apologized to French Paris Saint-Germain and the fans for his trip to Saudi Arabia, which caused a strong dispute in the last hours.

PSG suspended Messi for two weeks after the player traveled without team authorization to conduct personal business, according to a club source.

“Ask my teammates and the club for forgiveness. I honestly thought we were going to be free after the game, as had been the case in previous weeks. I had organized this trip to Arabia, which I had previously cancelled,” begins the short video that Messi published in their Instagram story.

“I repeat again, apologize for what I did and I’m waiting for what the club decides,” concludes the captain of the Argentine team that won the World Cup in Qatar.

In a post on Twitter, accompanied by undated images showing Messi relaxing with his family, Ahmed Al Khateeb, Saudi Arabia’s tourism minister, wrote on Monday: “I am happy to welcome #Messi and his family to Saudi Arabia to enjoy magical tourist destinations and authentic experiences.”

He added: “We welcome visitors from all over the world to experience a unique journey to Saudi Arabia and its hospitality.”

Messi himself published on Instagram days ago a promotion for tourism in that country: “Who thought Saudi Arabia was so green? I love exploring its unexpected wonders whenever I can. #visitsaudi.”

Lionel Messi is about to complete his second season at PSG, following his shock departure from Barcelona of Spain in 2021.

Although they conquered Ligue 1 in 2022, and the team is heading to a new title in the tournament, the Champions League, the club’s great goal, remains a pending score in a star-studded institution.

This week, a group of fans protested in front of the club headquarters, where he sang against Messi, and also at the gates of the home of Neymar Jr., the Brazilian star.
