Apple’s vice president of environmental, political and social initiatives, Lisa Jacksongave a new interview to talk about racial equity and how to build a stronger workforce through diversity and respect for the environment.

in your statements to The Washington Postthe executive emphasized that climate solutions must also “include equity”, pointing to an important crossroads where all these efforts meet.

In that sense, she highlighted the many investments that Apple has made (and still is making) over the years in racial equity, the most recent being the Equity and Social Justice Initiative (REJI), launched in 2020 — and which has already surpassed US$200 million in investments.

She added that Apple launched the initiative with one main goal: education. According to the executive, “education is the ladder, the path to equity and is probably the most important pillar of our investments”.

Asked how the climate changes could be linked to issues of social and racial justice, Jackson asserted that “floods and fires know no race”. In that sense, she pointed out that Apple is acting to minimize the effects of these changes “in all types of communities”.

in relation to sustainable efforts Apple, Jackson commented on the use of cobalt in batteries of lithium ion on devices like the iPhone. Not surprisingly, she reiterated the company’s pledge to use 100% recycled cobalt by 2025.

On the other hand, she refused to answer a question about the lawsuit filed against several companies, including Maçã itself, for allegedly encouraging forced child labor in the Republic of Congo for cobalt mining – a case that has been dragging on since 2019, worth notice.

Other topics covered during the interview include the resources of accessibility on Apple devices and US-focused changes such as banning the affirmative actions at American universities — so that, according to the executive, Apple was one of the 70 companies to argue that affirmative action in college admissions should remain in force.
