  • Lisa Mazzone is running for president of the Green Party.

  • The 35-year-old would succeed Balthasar Glättli.

  • Mazzone was voted out of Geneva as Councilor of States in October.

Lisa Mazzone, who was voted out as a councilor in Geneva, wants to become president of the Swiss Greens. In an interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”, the 35-year-old explained her motivation: After careful consideration, she came to the decision to take on this exciting challenge. She believes this position offers her the ideal space to contribute her skills and beliefs. That’s why she decided to stand for election. “My heart simply beats for the Greens!” she says.

We are currently at a turning point: the darkest scenarios regarding climate and biodiversity are becoming reality, while at the same time vehement headwinds are being felt. Nuclear power is making a comeback, an intensive debate about the wolf population has broken out, plans to expand the highway to six lanes are being pushed forward and right-wing populist movements are gaining support. She is firmly convinced that the Greens have a crucial role to play during this time.

«Am I nice? “Sometimes more and sometimes less”

Being a party president without sitting in parliament remains an exception in Switzerland. Ursula Koch was SP president from June 1997 to April 2000 and did not sit in parliament.

Lisa Mazzone prefers to cite a foreign example: “The current German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck also led the Greens without sitting in the Bundestag. We were able to talk on the phone a few days ago. He shared his experiences with me and encouraged me to run for president.” When asked about outgoing Green Party President Balthasar Glättli, who was considered sociable, she said: “Am I nice? Sometimes more and sometimes less.”
