Liverpool FC pulls past Manchester City after a draw against Tottenham Hotspur

Both teams showed an enormously high pace from the start – Liverpool fired the first warning shot after four minutes through Sadio Mané (4th), shortly afterwards the guests also showed their first danger in front of the LFC after a shot by Rodrigo Betancur -Goal (7th).

After a wild exchange of blows in the early stages, Liverpool took control as the game progressed against deep-lying guests and, apart from a long-range shot by Trent-Alexander Arnold (25th), were unable to create any clear chances for a long time.

Shortly before the break, Virgil van Dijk’s header from a corner only hit the top of the bar (39′), on the other side Pierre-Emil Höjbjerg fired his long-range shot after a counterattack against the outside of the post (43′).

Chelsea gambled away 2-0 lead – United conceded heavy beating

After the change of sides, the Reds took a cold shower: Harry Kane defended a long ball in front of the Liverpool penalty area and served Ryan Sessegnon, who ran with him, on the left of the penalty area. His well-considered cross pass reached Heung-Min Son, who effortlessly slotted in to put the Spurs ahead from close range (56′).

With their backs to the wall, Liverpool increased the pressure again and scored a well-deserved equalizer after almost 20 minutes of running. Luis Diaz tried his luck from 20 yards out, Betancur deflected to the left corner to make it 1-1 for keeper Lloris (74′).

The Reds ran tirelessly in the closing stages, but were unable to score a dangerous goal against guests who were defending with all their hands apart from a deflected Salah shot (90′). Liverpool’s title dream is now a long way off and could become almost unattainable should Manchester City defeat Newcastle on Sunday.

The voices:

Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool Manager): “I’m not happy, but I’m not as sad as my players either. Kane and Son were completely rested today. That’s why it’s so hard to win the quadruple. There’s a reason no one in this country has done it before.”

Antonio Conte (Trainer Tottenham Hotspur): “A good result for us. We defended superbly against a fantastic team and took our chance in front of goal.”

The tweet about the game:

That was noticeable: Liverpool desperate at the Spurs bulwark

The Spurs defended brilliantly throughout the season and threw themselves into almost every attempt made by the Reds. In addition, the Conte-Elf, with a compact order around their own penalty area, only allowed a few dangerous shots and kept Liverpool on goal with only three shots. Tottenham’s wingers repeatedly ran into Liverpool’s wingers around Salah and Diaz early on, preventing the dribbling artists from picking up the pace at all. In the center of defence, the Londoners also proved their superiority in the air with the numerous flanks with their three tall central defenders.

The stats: 17

In 2022, Spurs striker Son has had 17 goal involvements in 16 Premier League games so far. No other player in the league has scored more points in 2022 than the Korean.
