At the end of a long-undecided match, Liverpool beat Arsenal (2-0) in a third round of the FA Cup. The Gunners went a fourth match without a win in all competitions.
The FA Cup 3rd round clash was won by Liverpool. Opposed to Arsenal this Sunday, the Reds validated their qualification (2-0) at the end of a disputed and long-undecided summit which ended with an own goal from Jakub Kiwior and a goal from Luis Diaz.
Jürgen Klopp’s Reds, current championship leaders, resisted numerous attacks from the Gunners before cracking them with a free kick from Trent Alexander Arnold, pushed into his own goal by Kiwior (81st), then a missile from Diaz into the top corner in added time (90th+5).
Arsenal’s bad run
The thousands of Liverpool supporters greeted the deliverance with an explosion of joy, a handful of them entering the pitch while a red smoke bomb was lit in the Emirates corner where they had taken their place. The outcome of the match may appear cruel for Arsenal, unable to convert their numerous chances in the first half (13 attempts to 2 before half-time).
Arsenal had several hot chances: Martin Odegaard shook the crossbar (11th), Alisson slammed a sharp shot from Ben White (38th) and repelled a blocked shot from Kai Havertz (60th), among others. Liverpool, without Mohamed Salah who left with Egypt for the CAN, also hit the bar twice by Alexander-Arnold (45th) and Diogo Jota (78th).
The north London team continues a fourth successive disappointment, a series launched by a draw against Liverpool before Christmas then two defeats also in the league, against West Ham and Fulham. On January 20, the Gunners will host Crystal Palace where Liverpool meet on Wednesday against Fulham in a League Cup semi-final.
