More than two decades ago, researcher Dan Buettner identified five places around the world where people live longer, healthier lives.

These places became known as the Blue Zones, where his study of people’s lives reveals some of the lifestyle habits they lived.

Traditional diets in all five Blue Zones consist of 90 to 98 percent plant foods.

These people’s diets center on whole grains, corn, rice, vegetables, potatoes, yams, beans, and nuts as snacks. They eat about a cup of beans daily. They may eat fish 3 times a week, and eat little or no dairy products.

As for drinks, they drink an average of 6 cups of water daily, in addition to herbal, green and black tea, coffee, and a little alcohol.

Buettner considers sleep extremely important. Those who cannot sleep long enough each day are advised to adjust the room temperature, cover the windows to block light, and remove electronic devices from the bedroom.

“People in the Blue Zones move every 20 minutes or so,” Buettner says. “They don’t exercise, they move, because their lives are supported by purpose. Their idea of ​​leisure is walking or gardening.”
