Local deputies express their position regarding the new Chamber table – La Discusión 2024-04-30 09:10:10

With 76 votes, representative Karol Cariola was elected president of the Chamber of Deputies yesterday, being the first member of the Communist Party to achieve such a position. This event represented an important achievement for the ruling party, which had recently lost control of the Senate.

In the first round of voting, Karol Cariola (PC) competed with Joanna Pérez (Democrats), however, neither obtained the 78 votes necessary for the election: Cariola received 76 supports compared to Pérez’s 75. Then, a second vote was held, where only the majority of the deputies present was required. On this occasion, the result was the same as the first round, which was enough for Cariola to win.

Meanwhile, with the same margin of votes, Gaspar Rivas (PDG) became the first vice president, and Eric Aedo (DC) the second vice president.

In 2022, the Communist Party had the second place, after Raúl Soto (PPD), but after a veto from the opposition, the ruling party had to define Vlado Mirosevic (Liberal Party) to preside over the Corporation.

Everything indicated that the same thing would happen this time, after Democrats raised their own letter -Joanna Pérez-, who was supported by the opposition.

“Fortunately, an atavistic veto has fallen, not only anti-communist, but also anti-democratic,” said the new president of the Chamber in her first speech, who also thanked her colleagues “who have honored their pledged word, and today have given their vote.” in favor so that a member of the Communist Party of Chile, for the first time in the history of our country, can preside over this Chamber of Deputies.”

“The word is honored”

The ind.-DC deputy, Felipe Camaño, highlighted the election of Karol Cariola.

“The word is honored, and when one makes a pact to respect an agreement, that must be carried out. Here there is an alliance that aspires not only to something administrative, but also points to how political sectors, having things in common, move forward with matters of justice and social security, issues that citizens expect of us. If an agreement made by people who fail to keep their word is not respected, the administrative order, and even the commissions, are put at risk,” he stated.

Personally, he said, “I have to preside over the Public Works Commission, in which we have unblocked different projects and moved forward, for example, the first of three provincial Roads directorates, understanding that our region is the one with the largest amount of dirt roads in Chile. For this reason it is necessary to continue and chair this commission, because we must promote the provincial of Diguillín and Itata, among other projects, such as the Chillán Beltway.”

Regarding the new table, Camaño stated that “it is necessary to abandon personal selfishness, and above all, the opposition must stop blocking all the projects that people long for and need.”

Opposition supported Pérez

From the opposition, they regretted Cariola’s arrival at the table.

“By a single vote, Karol Cariola, of the Communist Party, has won the table of the Chamber of Deputies with the support of the Christian Democracy, a party that was founded to fight against this disastrous ideology, an ideology that only preaches division and poverty throughout the world. Furthermore, I regret that supporters of the ideas of freedom, such as the people of the Republican Party, have been absent in this vote and have allowed Karol Cariola to lead the Corporation today, the third power of the State, led by a communist, considering the enormous damage that they have done to Chilean society and the entire world. Therefore, they are going to have to give explanations, not only to his electorate, but also to the entire country,” said RN deputy Frank Sauerbaum.

He added that his bench supported Joanna Pérez and “we did not ask for anything in return, we did not ask for any position at the table, because we understood that the important thing was to give it transversality, that the central sectors were duly represented, and that changes also occurred in the commissions , to be able to face a government that has a legislative agenda very different from the priorities of Chileans.”

From the UDI, representative Marta Bravo stated that “as we had stated in recent weeks, our candidate for the presidency was representative Joanna Pérez. We believe that it was the best card to advance the security projects that Chileans demand, the reforms to the political system that the country demands of us and all the health and pension emergencies that exist today. “We hoped to be able to reach a broad agreement that would give governability to the Chamber of Deputies for the next two years.”
