Losing in Chennai means losing not only the series; Aussies threaten India’s top rank

Chennai: Two headaches await Team India as they land in Chennai for the final ODI against Australia. If they lose, Team India will lose the first place in the ODI rankings along with losing the series.

India is currently the number one team in men’s ODI cricket. Having won the last 8 ODI series, the Indian team has 114 rating points. Aussies’ points tally reached 112 with a massive 10-wicket victory in the second ODI in Visakhapatnam. If Chennai loses to Aussies in the ODI, Team India will lose the top spot. If the Aussies win the series 2-1, both the teams will have 113 rating points each. At the same time, India can increase the points to 115 if they win. With 111 rating points each, New Zealand and England are at the third and fourth positions respectively. Pakistan stands fifth with 106 points. When they finally reached India for the ODI series, the Aussies won the series 3-2. After winning the first two matches under Kohli, Team India lost three games.

India won the first match of the three-match ODI series in Mumbai by five wickets at Wankhede. Batting first, Australia were bowled out for 188 in 35.4 overs, while India won by five wickets in 39.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the match with two wickets and 45* runs. KL Rahul’s batting was crucial as he scored 75 runs without getting out. In the second ODI, Mitchell Starc bowled India out for 117 runs in 26 overs with five wickets. In reply, Travid Head (51* off 30 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (66* off 36 balls) gave the Aussies a 10-wicket victory.
