Lukhanyo Mdingi is the winner of the 2023 Amiri Prize

A few days ago, the Amiri label revealed the new winner of its 2023 Amiri Prize: South African designer Lukhanyo Mdingi.

Overall winner Lukhanyo Mdingi was selected from a group of nine finalists by founder Mike Amiri and a panel of industry experts. He will benefit from a year-long mentorship with Mike Amiri and a grant of 100,000 dollars (approximately 93,339 euros).

Alongside him, the finalist candidates were Abdel El Tayeb, Dorian Who, Ekwerike Chukwuma, Grace Ling, Advisry’s Keith Herron, Li Gong Lukhanyo Mdingi, Luke Zhou and Mike Huang.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Amiri Prize, its jury committee and Mike Amiri for the immeasurable opportunity provided to the Lukhanyo Mdingi label. We look forward to receiving the foundational guidance needed to steadily grow our independent business and vision.” enthuses the creator in a press release.

Launched in 2021, the Amiri Prize was created as a fashion incubator to support emerging talent in the industry. This year, the second edition opened for the first time to international candidates, attracting nearly 1,000 candidates around the world.

Born in 1992, Lukhanyo Mdingi launched his eponymous brand in 2015, in Cape Town, South Africa. His work is distinguished by his collaboration with local artisans whom he highlights. In September 2021, he also won the Karl Lagerfeld Prize awarded during the eighth edition of the LVMH prize.
