Lutjegast bird flu outbreak forces cull of 45,000 poultry birds

An outbreak of avian influenza has struck a commercial layer poultry farm in Lutjegast, forcing authorities to cull approximately 45,000 birds to contain the spread, RTV Noord reported. The discovery marks the first time the virus has been confirmed at a Dutch poultry facility since July.

Officials Establish Ten-Kilometer Restriction Zone Around Farm

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature ordered the immediate depopulation of the site, with execution handled by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). To prevent further transmission, officials established a strict ten-kilometer restriction zone surrounding the affected farm in the Westerkwartier municipality. This containment ring incorporates a three-kilometer protective zone alongside a broader ten-kilometer surveillance area, as detailed by WâldNet.

Within this ten-kilometer perimeter, a comprehensive transport ban takes effect immediately. The restriction prohibits the movement of live birds, hatching eggs, and table eggs from any commercial or hobbyist location in the zone. Officials also blocked the removal of poultry manure and used litter. According to Omrop Fryslân, the restricted area extends across the provincial border into the eastern part of Fryslân, affecting nearby communities such as Buitenpost, Augustinusga, Gerkesklooster, Kollum, and Burum.

Regional Impact on Surrounding Holdings

The containment boundaries directly impact twenty-one other agricultural holdings situated within the ten-kilometer surveillance zone. While no other poultry farms sit inside the immediate one-kilometer and three-kilometer radius, the wider restrictions affect all commercial operators and backyard bird keepers alike. Non-avian livestock and associated agricultural products may still enter and leave premises within the zone, provided transporters adhere strictly to the sanitation protocols outlined in the national hygiene framework.

The NVWA initiated a tracing investigation to examine high-risk contacts. Inspectors are reviewing transport logs to determine whether poultry or products moved to or from the Lutjegast facility in the days preceding the diagnosis. Any linked premises face potential supplementary measures, including targeted sampling or preventive movement blocks.

Ministry Monitors Risk Without Mandatory Nationwide Housing Order

Despite the sudden resurgence of the virus, the ministry confirmed that the Lutjegast contamination does not currently trigger a mandatory nationwide housing order requiring farmers to keep poultry indoors. Producers in other regions have expressed anxiety regarding the evolving situation, balancing biosecurity concerns against operational constraints. The Ministry of Agriculture continues to monitor developments closely and has tasked the Animal Disease Expert Group with delivering a fresh risk assessment regarding the potential for wider transmission across the country.
