A major vaccination campaign is launched Tuesday across Madagascar aimed at protecting some 18 million children and adults against poliomyelitis, the office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Madagascar said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Madagascar, with the support of the WHO as well as other partners in the global polio eradication initiative, has prepared more than 20 million doses of vaccines which are expected to be administered over the next four days.

This vaccination campaign is being carried out due to the resurgence of poliomyelitis in Madagascar. Indeed, for this year, 79 cases have been reported with a cumulative of 287 cases since September 2020, distributed in 30 districts of 13 Malagasy regions.

“We are committed at all levels to accelerating the implementation of a high-quality vaccine response that also covers people over the age of 15,” said Yasmine Laetitia Lydie, Secretary General of the Malagasy Ministry of Health.

Madagascar is prioritizing timely, quality campaigns while putting in place an environmental monitoring system to enable early detection and adequate sample collection, the statement said.

WHO experts on the ground are also helping Madagascar collect additional samples to strengthen polio surveillance, while assessing the possibility of opening new environmental monitoring sites for early detection of silently circulating polioviruses, according to the same source.
